Alain Briot Print of the Month Collection
Print of the Month Photograph Number Eighty Seven

Oljeto Tree
(copyright logo not present on actual fine art print)

Zabriski Point arrived this weekend, and it is simply stunning.
The paper, the matting, very very professional and speaks "quality."
The photograph itself is much like the desert.
It speaks slowly, revealing itself over time. Very subtle and yet a very powerful force of nature.
An excellent work. The Master File is icing on the cake!

The Photograph
The 87th Alain Briot Print of the Month Collection photograph is titled Oljeto Tree. Oljeto is one of the Canyons that drain in the San Juan River, in Southern Utah, from the North. Oljeto, which means "Moonlight Wash" in Navajo, is located on Navajoland. The San Juan River effectively forms the Northern end of Navajoland in Southern Utah.

I visited Oljeto Wash several times, each time accessing it by floating down the San Juan River. It takes several days to get to Oljeto because the canyon is located in the lower part of the San Juan River. I took 7 to 8 days, although it is possible to go faster if one just "cruises on down" and doesn't pay attention to much along the way. Because this is not my style, I had to take over a week to get there.

The first published photograph of Oljeto was taken by Elliott Porter. I say " first published" because there may have been others taken before but they never made it into a book. Elliott calls Oljeto"Moonlight Wash" in his books. He mainly photographed at the mouth of the canyon because in his time the upper part of the canyon was difficult to access. This was before Glen Canyon Dam backed up the waters on the San Juan River, Colorado River and Escalante River in what is today called Lake Powell. At that time, Oljeto Wash ended in a 100 foot high dry fall. Today, with Lake Powell slowing down the flow of the river, mud has accumulated and one can walk straight into Oljeto from the San Juan. The dry fall is buried under tons of mud.

Oljeto Tree is located several miles upstream from the San Juan River. I photographed it twice, both times in mid to late afternoon. The location is at a turn in the canyon, with the tree standing under an overhang with the canyon wall behind it. The light hits the wall above the tree, bouncing back onto the wall behind it. The bounced light, colored by the canyon wall, merge with the open shade to create a combination of saturated greens, orange and reds. The effect is not unlike that of a slot canyon, but with vegetation and a more open canyon area.
