Alain Briot Print of the Month Collection
Print of the Month Photograph Number Thirty Four

Sabino Saguaros

I received my March Print of the Month today and I have to tell you that the quality of your work is stunning, and that your photographs look a lot better in reality than on the internet. The web just doesn't do justice to fine art photographs.

You have to see the real thing to really appreciate Alain's work.

The Photograph
The 34th Alain Briot Print of the Month photograph is titled Sabino Saguaros. The idea for this photograph came during the fall 2005 Barrio Workshop held in Tucson, Arizona. At this time I created this image with the Canon 1DsMk2. After seeing the quality of the Canon photograph, I decided to return to this location and take the same photograph with my Linhof 4x5 Master Technika. The saguaros look great in a large print, and the 4x5 transparency enables me to make 40 x 50 enlargements. I did so in mid-December 2005. I took along a print of my first photograph as a guide, to make sure I composed the image in the exact same manner.

Creating a photograph while using your own photograph as a compositional guide is, incidentally, a rather strange experience. A number of months ago I used to look for compositions created by other photographers. However, this was the first time I was looking for a composition created by myself.

This approach, or a variation of it, is actually quite common for me at this time. I currently carry two camera systems when I photograph, a 1DsMk2 and a Linhof 4x5 system, in two different bags, or in the same bag, by paring down the 1DsMk2 system to the camera and one lens, depending on the specific requirements imposed by the location I am photographing.

The reason for doing so is two folds: first, it enables me to see the photograph histogram and preview. In this respect the 1DsMk2 works as a digital light meter and as a viewing tool. Second, it allows me to capture the image both on film and in digital format. Because film takes one to two weeks to ship & process (I send all my films to PhotoCraft in Colorado), I can work with the digital files right away, and post these files to my web site virtually immediately if I write an essay about my recent shoot for example.

I used this approach as recently as a couple of weeks ago in my Coso Range essay, which is illustrated with digital photographs taken with the 1DsMk2. I only received my 4x5 films back today, and although three of the photographs in this essay were taken with 4x5 as well, it will be an additional week or so before I have them scanned and corrected to my liking.

The Print
This photograph is available framed and unframed. It is hand signed on the mat and the print. The frame is a handmade Mahogany Finish Frame. The moulding is truly magnificent and does emphasize the beauty of this image. The photograph I took of the moulding show very closely how beautiful this presentation is. However, these pieces looks much better in reality than a web photograph can show! You just won't believe your eyes when you receive yours. All the framing materials used are Museum Quality, archival supplies. All my work is guaranteed for life in regard to fading and damage caused by framing materials.

Framed pieces are delivered in a stunning mahogany finish frame.
