The best news of all this month is that the Composition Mastery DVD is now complete and undergoing final review as I write. Unless something unexpected happens, the DVD will be released next week.

Exciting Details about the Composition Mastery DVD contents
The composition DVD took me over a year to research and nearly 6 months to produce (I started in late January 08). It is my most ambitious tutorial project to date. I am very pleased that it is now complete as I felt at times that I would never get it finished. What happened is I kept finding more material to add, and I kept having new ideas for things to include. As it stands it has to be the most complete tutorial for photographic composition that I know of, and I have researched the subject in depth.
This very unique tutorial is based on the concept that composition is way more than the rules of composition (the traditional rules that we have all been taught such as the rule of thirds, the golden rule, leading lines, and so on).
Instead of being just about these rules (that many photographers find limiting and restrictive), I believe that composition is about everything that has an effect on the visual contents of your photographs. This means that, in this tutorial, I look at how light, color, contrast, black and white, personal style, inspiration, cropping, framing, image borders, edges, vision, your audience, the location, your knowledge of astronomical events (sun and moon movement and location in the sky at a given time of day and year), stitching, lenses, exposure, print reviews, and much more have an effect on composition.
I also provide you with a checklist for print reviews in which I offer cures for what I call the most common "print maladies." I also look at what consists a fine print and to the qualities that a print has to have to be considered world-class.
This is just a short-short summary of the contents of this new Tutorial and course on Composition. I will have a fully detailed list of all the contents when the DVD is officially announced.

Composition DVD Update
I completed the editing and the first beta version of the DVD today. We will now be testing the DVD, and if all goes well it may be available as early as next week.

All the recordings are now completed. I have not totalled the number of hours that these audio and video recordings cover, but I estimate it to be over 40 hours.
I am now editing the recordings, a process that takes time since I have to listen to all the recordings again. After this is completed the final step is to complete the interface and the tutorial will be ready.
I feel very good about the quality of the recordings. One of the reason for the delayed release of this new course is my desire to include as much material as possible. Among these are literally hours of new material on composition, as well as information that I have not presented before.

I have now completed all the text, pdf and quickstep files for the DVD and I am in the process of recording the last 3 steps (out of 32) of the audio and movie files. I hope to be done with all recordings and ready to edit and finalize the DVD by the end of the week. I have a workshop this weekend so I will then resume work after the workshop.
I just posted an essay about image stitching with Phase One P45 digital back files. It is available at this link. Be sure to read it since it addresses one of the 32 steps on the DVD: Image Stitching for composition, not resolution. Stitching has become a new way of composing images, and I cover this new aspect of composition in depth on the Composition Mastery DVD.

The composition DVD is moving right along. The DVD consists of 32 separate steps, each of them featuring audio and video recordings as well as PDF files, Word files, Photoshop files and more.
As of today I have completed the recording of 19 out of the 32 steps. The recordings take a huge amount of time to complete because of the very large amount of data and information featured on the DVD.
After the recordings are all done I will be editing the audio and the video and completing the text files that accompany each step.
This is a huge undertaking and it seems that I am including more information on this DVD than I did on my previous DVD tutorials (the Marketing Mastery and Printing Mastery DVDs).
4/15/08
The release date for the Composition DVD is tentatively set for May. A commercial shoot in France earlier this month slowed my progress on this project but I have since resumed work and I am now over 60% done.
I have also added new material that I did not originally planned to feature. As always I want this tutorial to be extremely comprehensive and to include as much material as possible.
