Selling your work like a pro – becoming part of the 20%

Selling your work like a pro: becoming part of the 20%

1 – Introduction
I am often asked for recommendations by students who want to sell their work and generate income from the sale of their photographs.  Usually these questions come from photographers who have tried to sell their work and have been unsuccessful and are wondering what to do next.

2 – Recommendations
My first recommendations is to revise your price list.  Most photographers get it all wrong, to put it bluntly, when it comes to pricing their work.  My second recommendation is to learn salesmanship.  There are 2 types of sales: the first one generates a few % of my income, the second one generates 95% to 99 % of my income.  Most photographers only make the first type of sales which means they miss out, or lose if you prefer, 95 to 99% of their potential income.

My third recommendation is to work on your marketing plan.  Many photographers start selling in restaurants, bars or other public places in addition to their website. Those are the starting points of most artists.  Unfortunately they are not enough to generate regular or significant sales.

To achieve regular significant sales you need to have a professional marketing plan tailored for your work, a plan designed to meet your financial goals and fit in your schedule.  This is something that has to be worked out in order to become successful.  Without a marketing plan you are left hoping for the best which is how most artists do it.  This does not work and this is why most artists make very little, if any, money from the sale of their work.

3 – Becoming part of the 20%
The goal is to become part of the 20%.  In any business, be it photography or any other product or service, 20% of the businesses take home 80% of the income.  The other 80% share the 20% of the income that is left.  In other words they get the crumbs while the top 20% share the pie, so to speak.

To make real money you need to be part of these 20%.  This is true whether you want to do this part-time or full-time, and whether you want to do this now or later.

You need to learn, study and practice marketing to become part of these 20%.  If you try to reinvent the wheel (meaning try to learn how to market your work on your own), it is virtually impossible to join the 20% because you have no idea what successful businesses are doing marketing-wise. They play close to the chest and what you see from the outside is not representative of what takes place behind the scene.  In fact what you see is often misleading because while you may see their marketing materials, you have no idea  what their marketing plan is.

The purpose of studying marketing and salesmanship is to give you this knowledge, bridge the gap between you and the 20 percenters and let you see what is really going on behind the doors so to speak.  The goal is to learn what the 20% are doing that you are not privy to so that you can become one of them.

4 – The 2016 Alain Briot Marketing Seminar
I will be teaching a Fine Art Photography Marketing Seminar in Spring 2016. This will be a 2 day event and it will take place in Peoria, Arizona.  Peoria is 30 minutes north of the Phoenix airport.

I will be teaching marketing techniques not featured in my Marketing Books. These are techniques I started using after I wrote the book (the book was written in 2009 a long time ago by current marketing standards).

This event is by invitation and places will be limited. I did not teach a marketing seminar for several years so I expect this one to fill out immediately.

If you are interested send me an email at: alain@beautiful-landscape.com with Marketing Seminar in the subject line. A discounted special offer will be available for the first registration.

I will email you detailed information about this Seminar upon receipt of your email.  This information will have a list of all the subjects I will cover during the Seminar.

Workshop Exercises

Workshop Exercises

Workshop Exercises

Natalie and I teach instruction-focused workshops.  During each workshop we give you Skills Enhancement Exercises to complete.   These exercises cover a wide variety of topics and their goal is to help you develop and refine your skills in every aspect of fine art photography.

These exercises vary from workshop to workshop and are therefore unique to each workshop.  We design these exercises to meet the specific goals of each workshop. For example, if the focus of the Workshop is Light, Composition, Creativity and Personal Style, the Skills Enhancement Exercises for this workshop will focus specifically on these 4 areas.

These exercises will then include the following:

1 – Learning about the different types of natural light and how to use them
2 – Studying and using the different types of compositions
3 – learning how to use a handheld viewfinder to compose your photogrpahs (this viewfinder is given to you during the workshop)
4 – Energizing your creativity
5 – Developing a personal style.

All these exercises are presented during the workshop through lectures given by Natalie and myself.  We also give you printed handouts for each set of exercises as well as a syllabus for the course and a detailed itinerary (you get a lot of documents to study with during our workshops)!

That way you do not need to take notes unless you want to. The handouts have everything on them. You then practice these exercises during the workshop under the guidance of Natalie and myself. We are here to help you and to offer suggestions and guidance.

Finally, most participants and students scontinue practicing with these exercises and using the handouts after the workshop.

Right now we still have seats available for our Spring 2016 workshop, but they is filling out quickly because participants are filling out their 2016 workshop schedules.  YOu can see which workshops still have open seats on teh Workshops Description page:

Alain and NatalieBriot Little Known Workshops

Alain and NatalieBriot Little Known Workshops

Alain and Natalie Briot Little Known Workshops Series

Introducing the Little Known Workshops Series
In addition to our regular series of workshops, which are opened to 12 photographers, Natalie and I offer a second series of workshops which are called the Little Known Workshops Series.

The goal of the Little Known Workshops is to visit and photograph places that we cannot go to with a regular size group.  With only 6 participants, and with some of the participants carpooling because they travel together (friends or couples), we have a small caravan and we can access locations to Little Known Areas that we could not photograph otherwise.  Some of these are locations Alain and I discovered by ourselves and that are very little known, or not known at all by photographers.

We also spend a fair amount of time driving on dirt roads during these workshops, which is part of the experience. If you like adventure, if you enjoy visiting places that other photographers do not visit, if you want to experience a workshop the way it should be taught, which is with personal attention, camaraderie and an itinerary that invites exploration, the Little Known Workshops have your name on it!

The Little Known Workshops have unique characteristics that makes them very different from our regular workshops:

First, their numbers are very limited. We offer them once or twice a year, and not every year. Their availability is dependent on our schedule and on our other commitments. There has been times when we have not offered them for 3 or 4 years in a row.

Second they are open to only 6 photographers, half the number of participants in our regular workshop series. This means that you will enjoy a personalized experience.  Natalie and I will have plenty of time to work with you, answer your personal questions and help you with the unique aspects of your work.

Third they are offered by invitation only. They are not listed on this website and the itinerary is not publicly available.

Fourth they are open first to previous workshop participants, based on their photography level. We may on occasion invite a new student but only after evaluating their work, goals and photographic abilities.

Fifth, you are with friends, not with ‘a group.’

Sixth, the Little Known Workshops require an ‘open mind’ and a taste for adventure in regards to logistics and schedule. Because the places we visit are remote and require driving on dirt roads, they may require a certain amount of driving skills to reach. This means that passenger cars are not appropriate and that an SUV is required.

Seventh, we will take you to locations that we could not go to with a large group. We will also take you to locations that we have personally discovered, locations that may not be photographed often or at all. Your workshop will be unique because we do not offer these workshops regularly. In fact, we often offer them only once, and if we offer it again we change the itinerary so as to explore new locations.

Eighth, your print review is longer, 30 minutes instead of 10 minutes on regular workshops.

Ninth, your print review will focus on long term goals rather than on ‘mistakes.’  For this reason we encourage you to bring images focused on a specific project or subject.  We also encourage you to bring 16×20 print size, matted if you travel by car, or rolled in a tube if you fly.

Tenth, Photographers who attend the Little Known Workshops are serious and committed to their photography.

How to join us:
If this series of workshops has your name on it and you would like to join us, just drop us a line at alain@beautiful-landscape.com with the words Little Known Workshops in the subject line. We will add you to the pre-registration list. If you have not taken a workshop with us before include a link to a portfolio of your work so we can see if this workshop is suited to your photography level.

These workshops are not announced on my site so the only way to know about them is through the pre-announcement list email. Therefore be sure to email us to add your name to the interest list if you want to be notified when a new Little Known Workshop is offered.

They are also not announced in my regular newsletter (the one to which you subscribe with the Subscribe button at the top of this page). Just to the private ‘little known’ email list!

Also, a quick response is recommended after you receive our email. The last one we offered filled up within 4 hours and quite a few people on the list were disappointed because they did not act fast enough.

We look forward to hearing from you!
