The Photograph
The 43rd Alain Briot Print of the Month photograph is titled Sierra Arch. This image was created in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, California, in 2006. I had been looking for this location for years and was delighted when I finally found it.

My initial idea was to create a color photograph. The granite of which the Arch is made of has a beautiful tan color. The sky was clear blue, and the mountains had a fresh coating of snow. Unfortunately, the color image did not convey the feelings of stark beauty and stunning natural shapes and contrast that I saw in my mind's eye. It took me several months to realize that the answer was a black and white version.

Creating this black and white version was not easy. I faced several challenges that I talk about in detail in the movie tutorial (see below). However, the final version is truly exciting to me and captures the emotional drama that I felt when I was at this location.

I create relatively few black and white images. But sometimes black and white is the only way to go. This is one such instance.

Death Valley Workshop
