The Photograph
The 41st Alain Briot Print of the Month photograph is titled Kyaatataypi Night.

Kyaatataypi is a Hopi word which means "Fanstastic View". It is the name of one of the properties I own in Northern Arizona. I chose this name because of the view one has from this location: over 180 degrees of unspoiled wilderness composed of pinyon pine forests, rolling hills, small lakes (when it rains) in the valley below, and sandstone canyons within a mile's distance.

Hopi is a language that uses similar words to describe physical and spiritual concepts. I also named it Kyaatataypi because of the visions that this place brings me. To me Kyaatataypi is a place which was intended to bring, or restore, balance. It was inhabitated in prehistoric times by Anasazi or Sinagua Native Americans, and evidence of their presence is found throughout Kyaatataypi in the form of pottery shards, manos, metates and the ruins of a multi-room pueblo.

My vision for this image came to me one night at home. The image I saw in my mind's eye is pretty much the one that I captured. I studied the technique necessary to successfully create such an image, then went to work on my next visit to Kyaatataypi. I set up my first attempt at night, which made things that much more difficult since I could barely see the tree that I chose as a foreground. The first image appeared to be a success, however, I tried again the next two nights. As it turned out, it was this first image that stood head and shoulders above the rest. Somehoww, my vision had materialized on my first try and further attempts proved less successful, not so much in terms of technique (all images are technically similar) but in terms of vision. In the end, it was as if I was moving further and further away from my original vision with each passing day.

The Master File for this image is provided to you on a CD which ships with the artwork at no extra cost. This master file shows you how I optimized this image. Information about the photograph, including exposure time, lens used and other technical details --basically all you need to know to create this image yourself if you want to-- are also provided in a separate file on the CD. If you are not familiar with what a master file is make sure to read my essay on this subject.

After unpacking your photograph, "Canyons of the San Juan 1," I was blown away by the colors, highlight, shadow detail, and the overall dynamic range of the image. The image posted on your web site comes nowhere near to expressing the brilliance and beauty of the actual print. It is simply superb and I am very glad that I chose this one.

The presentation, framing, matting, and backing were also first rate. The frame complements the image very nicely. The print was very well packaged to prevent any damage and it arrived as promised. If we ever move I’d like to hire Natalie to help with the packing ;-)

All in all Alain, a first rate job all the way around! I will look forward to displaying this image to friends and visitors.
