This photograph was created during our February 2005 Weekend Workshop to Jerome, Arizona. This workshop focused on Personal Style and Composition.

I was fascinated by the contrast between the rusty metal of this abandoned mining equipment and the vivacity and movement of the vegetation that is growing onto it. It is already the beginning of Spring in Arizona, and this new twig found a propitious hanging place wrapping itself around the old chain. I was fascinated by the relationship between the living, growing plant and the rusty metal. The contrast between life and death, so to speak, between organic and static, between a plant that changes shape as it grows and equipment that has looked the same for years.

I originally created this image in color. However, once I returned to my studio I realized that color took away from what I was trying to express, away from the message and the graphic quality of the image. So I printed it in black and white

To emphasize the quality of the print, which is stunning (be sure to look at the large detail, below), I decide to mat this photograph in a museum quality, off white mat. This is a hinged mat, with the backing board the same quality as the mat, done exactly the way photographs in my Navajoland Museum Print of the Month are matted. It looks stunning.
